We do have occasional need for unpaid interns. If you have an interest in our Internship Program, please read below.
Internship Program
Fulcrum Publishing often seeks energetic and enthusiastic interns for various departments in our Golden, Colorado, office. Ideal candidates for all positions will be detail-oriented multitaskers with excellent organizational and computer skills and available 10–20 hours per week. Proactive individuals who want a great introduction to book publishing are preferred!
Please Note: The intern positions below are posted year-round, regardless of availability. Applications are accepted and considered on a rolling basis and internships are only offered as we need interns. Internships need not correspond with academic semesters.
Production
The Design Department seeks a detailed-oriented individual eager to learn the design and production aspects of book publishing. As the design intern, you will help the design and production team maintain the functionality of backlist titles and develop the frontlist. Specific responsibilities include maintaining a functioning archive of backlist digital files, assisting in upgrading older titles to current file formats to give them new lives (for instance, as e-books), creating ads for frontlist titles, making corrections to a book as part of the production process, attending meetings with other departments to learn how books are planned and how design evolves. The intern will provide general support for the production team. Solid design computer skills a must; familiarity with InDesign is essential, as well as willingness to apply those skills to older formats such as PageMaker and Quark 4.1. A working knowledge of style sheets is a plus. Later in the application process we may want to see samples of your work, either in person or as pdfs, that show attention to detail and mastery of applicable skills.
Marketing
The Marketing Department seeks a creative individual interested in learning more about marketing and publishing. As a marketing intern you will help market Fulcrum’s books and authors and act as general support for the marketing team. Basic duties will include data entry, filing, assembling press kits and general mailings. Opportunities can be created based on your individual strengths and could include participation in marketing planning meetings, writing marketing copy, designing marketing collateral, pitching to the media, and so forth.
Editorial
The Editorial Department seeks a detailed-oriented individual eager to learn the editorial aspects of book publishing. As the editorial intern, you will help the editorial team usher our books through to the final product. Specific responsibilities include preparing and coding manuscripts, light proofreading, and compiling text corrections. The intern will provide general support for the editorial team. Familiarity with proofreading, copy editing, The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th
Edition, and Microsoft Word’s editing tools a plus.
